“God and the Sea” by Dianne H. Timmering

“Our father who art in heaven . . . Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:9

“So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds.” Genesis 1: 21

Wading through the noise, I have a vision of treading water.

I dig a hole inside the watery deep getting to the bottom of the cacophonous sounds of that which clouds my ears; swimming deeper, pressure bites my eardrums. But I can breathe and I seek the depths where God is a fish and the mountainous terrain is below me.

I switchback, zig-zag, to go ever further where the water grows cold and space dark but the noise begins to die and peace frills across my skin and a strange quadruped swims under my nose as it beckons me forth. Swimming grows easier even while the pressure squeezes, but movement lightens and I speed across the seafloor where man is remote and creatures fly. For God lives in the sea where the world is His and the natural underground is a realm of the heavens on earth. Is this His secret hiding place or is it His one of many houses? He smiles for He does not say, but what does it matter. For we are together and I have found Him, for He has found me.

Close your eyes and find Him too. For He will find you there. Let Him reach into your watery tear and you will know a peace with the ineffable quality of knowing. There is something inside you, that you know, you just know, because it is real.
